Description
Old Colorful Ethiopian Magic Scroll, with Original Calligraphy and Art Work. Very Old Ethiopian Magic Scroll, with Original Calligraphy and Art Work. A nice Ethiopian scroll: 62 inches long and almost 4 inches wide. It is hand written in black ink, with headings, keywords, and markings in red. It is written in Ge`ez, the liturgical language of Ethiopia. On vellum. The Christian artwork in this scroll is quite evident. With three pictures, one in the beginning, one in the middle, and a small one at the end. At the beginning, there is a pictured of a guardian angel, with sword in hand to ward off the evil spirits, all in red, black, purples and other colors. The middle picture depicts four faces with wings, probably in reference four Evangels, or, perhaps, the four corners of the world. In a case, these also meant to protect the bearer of the scroll. At the very end, there is a picture of series of eyes. The reference here is quite clear. It meant to save guard the bearer of the scroll from the evil eye. The scroll is in very good condition. It is housed in a two-part slip case, which is sewn in such way that the cover can be threaded and worn as a necklace. The Magic Scrolls are used as personal protections and reflect the beliefs and customs of the Ethiopians. The length of the scroll represents the height of the person being protect by the scroll. To understand these magic and healing scrolls, please consult Chapter Six of Budge’s AMULET AND TALISMANS, pages 177 – 199, Mercier's ETHIOPIAN MAGIC SCROLLS), and ETHIOPIAN MANUSCRIPTS BY David Appleyard.
