Description
Thank you for viewing my auction. I have been collecting for almost 50 years and purchased all my items from the most reputable sources but mostly at auction in London. The majority of purchases were made in the 1960's-80's when good things were available on a regular basis. I will be selling over 1000 items in the next few months so be sure to bookmark the Sunnytampa seller page as I will be adding rare and interesting items on a regular basis. If you are interested in bidding on multiple items, please note that I will combine shipping and make it point to never profit from shipping. Read our feedback and bid with confidence. This is a large red terra cotta pot from the Holy Land with a fine provenance. It dates to about 1000 BC and is 5 1/2" in diameter and 6 3/4" high with a bulbous body and flared lip. It is wheel turned and coarse wear. It probably was a water vessel and when left in the sun, would "sweat" causing evaporation and thus cooling the water within like a desert water bag. Condition is as shown. As with much of the items which came to auction in England in the 70’s and 80’s, this came right out of the woodwork. It came from a collection of pottery sold in several lots (we bought it all) which was accompanied by a letter from Larry Brougham at Neswick Hall dated 5 Feb 1934 identifying the pottery as having come from the sale "at Paxton Park when the late lady Esme Gordon sold things there." Neswick Hall, now demolished, was in West Yorkshire. Paxton Park is in Little Paxton Parish which is on the river Ouse (in which, incidentally, Virginia Wolf drowned herself) near St. Neots, Cambridgeshire. "Esme Gordon" is a Scottish surname and the sale would have taken place about 1915. This is a real flashback to the time of the titled and wealthy. We will send a copy of the letter to the purchaser of this item. PP12 (1) Shipping options: Priority Mail shipping includes full insurance. I am always happy to combine shipping and charge actual shipping cost only-no packing or handling charges.
