The instrument is housed in a bakelite type case and does not have any cracks , breaks or scratches. It does come with its own leather carrying case with shoulder strap. The instrument can be read from the top or side through a mirror. It is made by the Aqua Survey and Instrument Co. Cincinnati, Ohio. It also has a pop up rectangular ring on top. If you have any info on this item please let me know. I suspect it it used to map the direction of streams and rivers ect---just a guess.  You must be happy with this high quality instrument!I package well for safe arrival.
