Description
19TH Century Pre-Ban Ivory Scrimshaw Sperm Whale Tooth 100% Guaranteed This very old scrimshaw dates back to the old whaling days of Hawaii. It was purchased in 1970 from a nautical shop on Front Street, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. I chose this scrimshaw because the tooth was so large and it was authentic. This will date to the Early whaling days and most likely from the Nantucket area, or at least the Eastern seaboard. The tooth is 6-1/4" long and 7" long if measured on the curve. It also weighs over a pound, at 17.5 ounces. The artwork is worn, but under magnification, you can see that the engraving was hand done with old style tools. The original ink is worn off in a few places from age and handling. This is a 100% intact and authentic treasure; it is a real, old, Ivory Sperm Whale Tooth scrimshaw and not one of those faux ivory, poly resin imitation scrimshaws that you see for sale.
