Description
This ceramic spider-leg tripod bowl in redware with a black and cream polychrome band is from the Chupicuaro culture of Guanajuato, Mexico.  It dates 500-100 BC.  The bowl stands approximately 6 1/4 inches tall; it is 10 inches in diameter.  The bowl is in excellent condition for its age. The site of the original village of Chupicuaro lies on the Lerma River in Guanajuato, nearly seven kilometers above the present town of Acambaro.  In 1949, construction of the Solis Dam on the Lerma was completed and the village with all of its archaeological environs were completely flooded over.  No classic Chupicuaro ceramicware has been unearthed since. This spider-leg bowl is clearly from the original, now flooded site.  It was purchased from a reputable dealer of Pre-Colubian art in Chicago in 1986.  The dealer acquired the piece from an American private collection where it had been held for more than 20 years.
