Description
Pair of heavy RARE Red Luaun (also called Phillippine Mahogany ) bookends from the Phillipine's. They are antique  mid  1920's.  These were carved and given to a great great Uncle who mined gold in the Phillipines in the 20's, in the Banquet Area. ) not sure what this area is called today, as Banquet was a Gold Mine.  They are Rare because  Red Luaun Wood is no longer available, and other trees are substituted as this original Red mahogany type wood for exotic exports.  Carved wood is in nice condition except a chip from one of the pots or baskets one is carrying, also on that basket it appears that part has been glued before, but nicely.. They are dusty but feel it best not to use anything on them to clean, you may have them cleaned, we just didn't want to harm them so we only used a soft towel.  These would be  a great addition to show cultural Filipino pride in your family, they are quite amazing, well carved and detailed.  We hope they go to a home where they will be appreciated, as culturally the Phillipines has changed.  (We also have old films of the area and people who mined the Banquet Gold Mines, showing many native peoples of Phillipines, quite interesting,  if you are interested please email, we would be willing to sell copies through ebay if there is interest.) These come from a smoke free and pet free enviornment. 9 1/4" high 4x4 1/2" base. Please send questions and address/zip code for shipping. Thanks for looking.   afternote:  Have been advised through an email that they may be another rare exotic wood as three dark heavy exotic woods come from the Phillipine area, so, these could possibly be either Luaun, Mangkono, or Kamagong wood.   We note that they have a redness to them, however the three rare woods all come in many shades from black to blond, so it wood be very difficult for an untrained eye to distinguish which type it is.  We are only sure of the the time period of which they were brought back from the Phillipines.
