Description
RARE FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION of PLATO HIS APOLOGY AND PHAEDO OR DIALOGUE CONCERNING THE IMMORTALITY OF MANS SOUL, AND MANNER OF SOCRATES HIS DEATH: Carefully translated from the Greek, and Illustrated by Reflections upon both the Athenian Laws, and ancient Rites and Traditions concerning the Soul, therein mentioned. London printing for James Magnes and Richard Bentley, 1675. Expertly rebound in dark brown leather; date of rebinding unknown; ribbed spine with six panels and gilt lined-lettered spine label. Professional paper repair to some torn page edges and corners. Engraved frontispiece, SOCRATES TRIUMPHANS, with torn lower corner repaired [see photo, also of Title Page]. Owner's name Robt Cottam written at top of Title Page; Cottam's name written also on Dedicatory Page with date of 1736. Later owners' names referenced in note affixed to front endpaper: circa 1848, James, Henry and Horace Grece: "Horace used to read that book a good deal. The writing in red ink upon the flyleaves is of John William Grece, father of the said Henry." The original flyleaves with reddish ink writing are bound in both front and back of book [see photo]. There are some markings in the margins in pencil [erasable]; also on page 234, notations in margin neatly written in sepia ink. 300pp 17x11cm; overall in Excellent Condition. Contents clean, tight, odor-free; supple leaves/paper. NOTE: An original page number printing error occurs at pp. 244-245, with 234-235 printed instead. I have observed the identical printing mistake in same edition book in another collection.
