"Sevres has been making porcelain since the early 18th century. The factory is known throughout the world for high quality and fine artistic design. Your figural group is an excellent example of bisque porcelain. The piece is very detailed and has several figures. This type of design was very difficult to cast and probably the reason why so few were made. The number on the bottom is likely the year of manufacture. The initials, as you surmised, are probably the artist's. This piece was well made, has several figures including animals and you have excellent proof of provenance. These features contribute to better than average value." .SEVRES BISCUIT GROUP MEASURES APPROX. 15" DIAMETER X APPROX. 16" TALL. After leaving Cuba in 1959, Fulgencio Batista was denied entry to the United States. Marta Batista followed her husband to the Dominican Republic for a short stay before going to Portugal and then Spain. She resettled in West Palm Beach after her husband died. To her grandchildren, most of them born in Spain, she told stories about how she met then-Gen. Fulgencio Batista. She was riding a bicycle when he ran her over,it was 1937 and although Fulgencio Batista was married, he fell in love with Marta, who was 20 years his junior. The two later married in 1945 and actually had lived in a home near the Halifax River in Daytona Beach. The couple donated their large art collection and home to the city of Daytona in 1957.Marta loved art and convinced her husband to build a large art gallery in Havana, Cuba. She was considered a patron of the arts. Marta’s husband ruled as Cuba’s president twice. Once after he orchestrated the “Sergeant’s Revolt” that deposed then President Manuel de Cespedes and second when he ruled from 1952-1959 after the overthrowing of President Carlos Prio Socorras. He was the last president to hold office prior to the rule of Dictator Fiudel Castro. Marta established schools and hospitals in Cuba Her family described her as elegant and poised. BERNSTAMM, 1897; the bust of Alexandra Feodorovna also impressed SEVRES within a rectangle, with incised monogram VP, and also incised L. BERNSTAMM, 1897. CATALOGUE NOTE These busts were commissioned from the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory after the visit of the Russian Emperor and Empress to Paris in 1896. On their way to Versailles the Imperial couple visited the famed porcelain manufactory at Sèvres accompanied by the French President Félix Faure, and were presented with many gifts including busts of Catherine the Great and Tsars Paul and Alexander I. According to the French press at the time, "Parisian society was gripped by admiration...few indeed were the Frenchmen who did not give way to real enthusiasm for the Emperor and for Russia over these days." See, Nicholas and Alexandra, Booth-Clibborn Editions, London, 1998, p. 107.Leopold Bernard Bernstamm, born in Riga, studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, and in the early 1880's achieved fame for a series of portrait busts of celebrated Russians in the fields of art, science and literature. In 1885 he settled in Paris and in 1896 was invited to Tsarskoe Selo to make busts from life of he Russian Tsar Nicholas II and the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna.Another such bust of Nicholas II is preserved in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, but an extant pair of busts including the Empress Alexandra, as in this case, is unknown. It is likely that the pair were presented to Tsar Nicholas II by President Félix Faure when he visited St. Petersburg in 1897. ***DUE TO THE SIZE & DELICATE NATURE OF THIS PIECE,BUYER WILL PAID FOR PROFESSIONAL PACKING,SHIPPING & INSURANCE*** ** A REMINDER TO OUR EUROPEAN FRIENDS THAT DUE TO THE EXTRAORDINARY!!
