The turquoise is genuine and has roping and a fancy scalloped edge surrounding it. The main chain of the necklace is composed of small round silver beads that look like they may be handcrafted. The necklace is signed with the letters " W T " as shown in the photograph, and its age is unknown. It is not stamped as sterling silver but the fine craftsmanship of the piece is a good indicator that its creator would use sterling silver. It is 12" long and the crescent pendant is approximately 3.5". The history of the squash blossom design originated early on when the Southwestern Indians saw the crescent shape on the horse bridles of the Spanish Conquistadors in the late 1500s and early 1600s.  Over time, the pendant became symbolic with many ceremonies but was mostly closely related to the agricultural cycle and associated with crop fertility. It is believed that the Navajo Indians first used the squash blossom design and that it was the Zuni who incorporated the turquoise. The Navajo later adopted this advent of the Zuni and began to incorporate turquoise.
