Description
Scale Queen Display – 15 Scale Queen Postal Scales ! More a work of art than a scale collection. I have been collecting Scale Queen letter scales since 1987. There is something about the design of these scales that sums up the whole art deco movement. A beautifully machined billet of aluminum, a demonstration of the metallurgic technology of the day, with the “secret” screw off beehive lid that revealed a relatively precise letter scale when the top was inverted and placed on the spring-loaded post. Many of these were imprinted with the names of firms on the Bakelite stand. Since I was a medical student in Chicago where I purchased my first scale in an antique store, I have remained fascinated with the design and execution of this scale. It is a real testimonial to the concept of form and function. Certain 20th century icons seem to stand out and become immortal. The Atomic Espresso maker is one. The Walkman by Sony another. This item belongs on the short list. For that reason, I decided to create a display of these scales which I have collected over the years. They are becoming more and more difficult to find and a single scale recently sold on Ebay for $123.00. This display is unique in that many of the scales were new-old-stock. They came in the original boxes with instruction manuals and have the postal rates of the day (1st Class-3 cents per ounce) imprinted on a card on the bottom. The rates date the scales to about 1950. The center row of scales is especially unique in that there is a gold anodized scale, a scale with a green marbleized base and the rarest of all, the bowling ball scale, also made by Thompson Engineering ( Eng) in very limited quantities. In all of my searching, this is the only one I have ever encountered. The rarity and the sheer number of scales included in this display is a really once in a lifetime find. For the scale collector or the collector of industrial art, this display is a rare and unique assemblage. It would probably take a person 20 years to replicate this display and certain pieces may never become available again. For more information about the Scale Queen, go to: http://home.casema.nl/a.a.m.sol/41thompson1e.htm I am starting this at what I consider a fair price with no reserve. All boxes and instruction sheets that came with some of these scales will be included. The display case will also be included. Please note that the display case is simply an old cassette holder, adapted for this application. It is not furniture-grade but it serves the purpose. Everything will be professionally packed and shipped once payment is made. If you have any doubts about my character, check my feedback. I like happy customers. See my other auctions for more interesting items. Thanks for looking and God Bless.
