Description
A very special telescope made by the famous 18Th century inventor Jesse Ramsden (1735-1800). It is signed along the tube "Je Ramsden London" and inscribed with a name "A. Balla", the engraving looks to be by the same hand and I think this instrument was commissioned by the first owner. As can be seen it shows it's age, a profesional clean and polish will do it world of good. The body tube is 65CM long and mounted onto tapering brass colum with angled brass adjustment rod complete with key to adjust height. The colum is mounted onto splayed tripod legs. The complete insturment is contained within a fitted mahogany case with accessories including two additional eyepieces and a 22CM long tube eyepiece extention. One of the eyepieces is filtered for viewing of the sun. This eyepiece do not use the additional 22CM long tube and screw directly onto the focusing mechanisam. It has the cap for the big lens and the securing pin for the leveling mechanisim with the key to adjust the level. There are records on the Sotheby's website regarding past auction records. Only one of these are of similar size and includes the extra 22CM long eyepiece extention, it was sold on 20 March 2003 for 9,600 GBP including buyer's premium (lot73 of sale L03500). Please ask questions and should you need additional pictures. I can except electronic payment and will discuss packing and shipping with the new owner. Please take a look at my other items.
