I purchased this set about ten years ago at a live auction.  Living in a small town I was able to trace the history behind it from the owner of the antique shop who had it.  Originally, it was owned by the local doctor in San Andreas, California right after the Gold Rush.  In 1900 he put it up for auction to help build a wing for the local hospital.  I do not know who won the auction, so there is a gap of approx. 90 years. The set was then up for sale during the mid-1990's at a local antique shop in Angels Camp (home of "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", that Mark Twain made so famous!)  An antiques dealer who was a friend  of the owners of the set sold it to him  (because he loved it so much)for what they thought was a "great" deal at $600, they had it marked up to $900 in their shop (yes, this is the antique shop owner that told me the history behind this set)  The antique dealer then divorced, and yes his ex-wife took "the set" , some say out of spite for her ex.  She then had it put up for auction in Sonora, CA and it was at that auction in 1999 that I purchased it, I was told I "stole" it by the owner of the antique store. This set is exquisite Bohemian overlaid cranberry (could be ruby) and white glass hand painted with colorful floral sprays and gilt accents the set is in excellent condition for its age,  no chips or cracks.  I would say the cordial glasses remind me of  shot glasses that a "gentleman" would have served his finest Bourbon or Scotch.
