This very rare piece is a Munising Wooden Nut Bowl with the nut cracking and nut cleaning tools. This extraordinary bowl is from the early 1930’s as far as we know from the research we could do and from the information we got from the family that owned it prior to our acquisition. The piece is from a company originally called the Munising Woodenware Company and later in its life called the Munising Wood Products Company that operated in the upper peninsula of Michigan from 1910 to the early 1950’s. They created wood products for the famous upscale department stores at the time. There is a great website that gives the rich history of this interesting company and they have a nice gallery of some of their pieces. We believe this bowl is made of a hard, sugar maple but we are not 100% sure. This special bowl has a diameter of 8-3/8” and proudly stands just under 2” tall. The wood has a uniform 5/8’ thickness. The bowl has two wonderful features. First there is a gorgeous hand painted pine cone and pine needle painted on one side as you can see in the photo. The pine cones are done in brown and a rich beige color. The pine needles are pine green and there is no paint flaking, the art work looks just as nice as the day it was created many, many decades ago. The second wonderful feature of this piece is the center of the bowl. It has a tool holder made of a round piece of solid dense wood with eight holes; six small and two large. The tool holder is attached to the bowl with an old brass screw to hold it in place as you can see in the photo of the bottom of the bowl. The large center holes hold the bottom handles of the nut cracker and the other six small holes hold six matching nut cleaners. The tools all match. The spring still works in the nut cracker to keep the handles apart when you are not cracking a nut. The tool set is exquisitely tooled and designed. The engravings are deep and excellent for holding the tools so they don’t slip in your hand. This tool set is a work of art in itself. We think they are made of some type of steel as they are attracted to a magnet. There is not rust but there is a nice patina starting to develop on some of the pieces. The bottom of the bowl has the famous left slanted cursive, wood burned lettering specific to the Munising Wood Products Company. There is no damage to the bowl; it is in amazing condition for being almost 90 years old. We did not polish the piece and it has its original finish that is excellent. The very bottom of the bowl has some scuff marks as you would expect, where it rests on the table or display cabinet surface. This outstanding piece of American history will be a centerpiece of almost any collection. Insurance will be required on this purchase if you are the high bidder at the auction. We will ship the piece with the shipper of your choice. This is a museum quality treasure that will be sure to generate many compliments and will surly become a family heirloom.
