Description
Make sure to check out our other EARLY AMERICAN FOLK ART in our ebay store by clicking the Eagle Antiques store logo above then click the "FOLK ART" category in left hand collumn. mid 1800's Cobalt Decorated Jug This mid 19th century advertising or vendor's jug is the larger 3 gallon size measuring 16 1/2" high. This type of jug would have been placed on top of the wagon to advertise a vendors goods while he traveled through the countryside.Of particular importance is that a greater majority of advertsing jugs have only the name & place mentioned but this example has the rarely seen beverage "WINES & LIQUORS"also mentioned. All drawn in free hand, the cobalt blue decoration states: WINCHELL & DAVISWHOLSESALEWINES & LIQUORSALBANYN.Y. I looked in two books on early American stoneware "Stoneware & Blue & White Pottery" by Husfloen and also "American Stoneware" by Raycraft and there was not even one hand drawn stoneware jug listed with the type of spirits contained inside, just later stencilled examples that are fairly common.Condition: there is one 5/8" chip on the lip, otherwise in fine condition with no other base chips or hairlines. If you collect New York cobalt decorated vendor jugs then this rare example would look great in your display. Powered by eBay Turbo Lister
